Package: OEM

  • OEM stands for “Original Equipment Manufacturer”, and can mean a number of things depending on the product to which it’s applied.
In the case of Windows Vista, an OEM copy is a near-exact duplicate of the full retail version in every way, except that it’s less expensive.

    So what’s the catch?
Unlike the Full Retail version, the OEM version saves cost by doing away with most of the shiny packaging & bulky manuals, and is allowed for sale only through distributors who also sell Vista-approved hardware in addition to the Operating System. As such, OEM versions are often found pre-installed on machines such as Dells and Gateways.

Due to the OEM’s more specific nature, it can be used only for new installations, not upgrades…so if you have an XP system you’re looking to move up to Vista, see the Upgrade-Only Version for a cost-effective solution.

Most importantly, the OEM’s lower price tag is reflected in the fact that Microsoft does not offer technical support for this version as it does for a Full Retail. They assume that any individual purchasing an OEM Operating System will be knowledgeable enough - or have access to enough technical resources - to handle the situation on their own.

OEMs also bear a slightly different re-installation policy than the Full Retail: once an OEM version is on your machine, it’s on there for good. You cannot transfer this version to a new computer later.
This won’t matter much to the majority of users who simply buy a whole new computer when they need to upgrade…but for the enthusiasts and system-tweakers out there, the OEM transfer policy is a bit more restrictive than you might prefer.
