Defining The 21st Century With A Card Scanner

by George Battles

The birth of the first computer has triggered a series of events that has changed everybody's lifestyle. Computers made it easier to store and organize files. It also made it easier to duplicate documents. In addition to that, encoding is no longer as tedious as typing using a typewriter because errors can be deleted with a press of a button. Along with computers came the internet. With the internet, the whole world is not connected and as long as you have a computer, be it a personal computer or a laptop, you can connect with your friends, family, and colleagues even when they are halfway across the globe.

The birth of digital storage devices like flash drives and memory cards also gave birth to a completely new breed of scanners or readers. These card readers are more popularly known as a card scanner. These scanners are specialized devices that are created to retrieve data or information stored in digital storage devices like flash drives, hard disks, and memory cards. These card scanners can be a single unit or it can be installed in other devices like a laptop, a desktop computer, a car computer. It is probably safe to say that the modern card scanners of today were patterned after the punch card readers that were used to retrieve information stored in punched cards.

There are different types of scanners, the term card scanner is a collective term for these devices. The memory card reader is a type of scanner that is used to read data stored in a smart card or flash memory card. A card scanner used to read cards with magnetic strips like credit cards and debit cards is known as the magnetic card reader. This reader interprets the codes stored within the magnetic strip found at the back of the card.

Other than retrieving data, this card scanner can also be used for security purposes. An example which is the access control card reader. Most modern facilities have this kind of card reader. This restricts the entry and exit of unauthorized personnel. To gain entry, an access card is required.
